Kingsmen finish third at SCIAC No. 2
April 10, 2013
The Kingsmen golf team showed off their skills at La Purisima Golf Club in Lompoc, on April 6 and 7. The team shot a second round 314, which gave them a two-day total score of 639.
The golfers landed a third place spot at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference No. 2, following second place team La Verne and first place team Claremont Mudd-Scripps.
Six Kingsmen attended the matches. Top scorers Mikey McGinn, Bobby Griffin, Parker Colvin and Barret McGinnis represented the team’s finest talent this past weekend.
Griffin and McGinn were Cal Lutheran’s top scorers of the tournament, both finishing in a tie for seventh place.
Junior McGinn was rested after spring break and brought his game face over the weekend.
“I used my spring break to rest and prepare for our upcoming tournaments, like this one,” said McGinn. “I really focused on improving my putting, because you have to putt very well in order to shoot a good score at La Purisima. I feel like I have made a huge improvement in my mental approach to the game during this season. I have learned how to think my way around the golf course, which has led to lower, more consistent scores.”
Griffin, a sophomore, shot a confident 82 and 75.
“The key element to our teams success is to stay motivated, but more importantly, to believe we are the best team in the land, period,” said Griffin.
Senior captain Colvin finished in 16th place with a final score of 163 for both days. Following Colvin was the debut of junior transfer Okkar Oo who tied for 24th place after shooting 86 and 82 for a final score of 168. Senior Chad Kimmelshue believes his team holds the key to victory.
“The key to success in golf is between the ears. It is a game that is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. It can be the most frustrating game in the world, but if you have a great mental game and a great mental mind set when you are on the course you will have success,” he said.
The Kingsmen golf team will return to show off their successful season scores one last time before the SCIAC Championship. They will take on Chapman in a head-to-head match Wednesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at Tustin Ranch Club in Tustin.
