Corrections: This article was updated at 9:39 a.m. on April 11 to correct several inaccuracies. The Fields of Opportunity sports career fair was not hosted by the Business of Sports Club, but rather by the Sports Management undergraduate program. Additionally, Abby Blom was not among one of the speakers at the beginning of the event, but instead it was Elisa Shott.
California Lutheran University’s Sports Management undergraduate program hosted its third annual Fields of Opportunity sports career fair in the Soiland Recreation Center on Tuesday, April 1.
Mark Orlando, director of the sports management program and faculty advisor of BOSC, said the event’s goal is to help students understand what skills are necessary to succeed in sports-related employment, while also making key connections.
The sports career fair was attended by over 20 sports teams and other organizations, including the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Kings, Conejo Oaks, and the sports management master’s programs of the University of San Francisco and California State University, Long Beach.
“I just started thinking about, ‘What would I want as a student that maybe I didn’t get at that given time,’ right? And we wanted to create a platform where students feel supported, right? It’s about building purpose, preparation and proficiency,” Orlando said. “They understand the skill sets they need, and they can start committing to those proficiencies that are gonna take them to the next level, so that’s why we do what we do.”
The event commenced with speeches from Elisa Shott, a student in Sports Facilities, Design and Management, and Orlando thanking the organizations and students for attending, as well as a brief overview of the event. Afterward, students were able to chat and connect with others during the allotted 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. time frame.
