Last week, California Lutheran University’s Kingsmen and Regals golf teams concluded their fall 2025 season, one of program records and historic performances.
The Kingsmen and Regals finished the fall competing in the Golfweek October Classic in Destin, Florida, where they finished in 17th and 10th place, respectively, out of 24 teams.
Junior women’s team member Anna Poulin shot a 2-under-par 70 on day two of the tournament, which, according to Head Coach Jeff Lindgren, was a “phenomenal round.” This season, Poulin also set a program record for most rounds at par or under (6), according to CLU Sports.
In September, the Kingsmen and Regals competed in the CA State Intercollegiate tournament, where the women’s team took first place on their home course, Olivas Links, in Ventura, California.
At this tournament, the Regals set program records for 18-hole team score (290) and 36-hole team score (589), and senior Kaylie Hesse, who came in second place, tied the program record for 36-hole individual score (145), according to CLU Sports.
“To be able to put the best team score together, you’ve gotta have everybody kind of firing on all cylinders all at the same time,” Lindgren said.
In the same tournament, senior men’s team captain Ty Kuroda tied for fifth place, individually, shooting 7-under-par. According to CLU Sports, “Kuroda shot the 4th-lowest 54-hole score in program history (209),” and the Kingsmen shot the “2nd-lowest team round in program history (275),” as well as the “2nd-lowest 54-hole team score in program history (853).”
Also in September, the Kingsmen and Regals competed in the RCA Electric Invitational in Carmel, California against a mix of NCAA Division II and III teams.
According to the tournament results, the Kingsmen came in second out of seven teams, defeating all of the DII teams in the tournament. Kuroda again finished in the top ten, placing seventh out of 46 players.
Senior women’s team captain Maya dela Rama said the Regals came in third place out of five teams and were the only DIII women’s team in the tournament. According to the tournament results, dela Rama tied for sixth place out of 30 players.
First-year men’s team member Kaden Devenport said the leaders on the golf team stepped up in a major way this fall.
“One of our team captains is Ty. He’s great, he’s very helpful,” Devenport said. “I look up to him in a lot of ways. He’s super organized, he always lets me know what’s going on.”
Lindgren, who said he has been coaching golf at Cal Lutheran for 36 years, oversees both the men’s and women’s squads. According to Lindgren, the teams, especially the men’s, underwent change as a result of top players graduating last May.
“They were kind of our top four or five guys, so we knew it was going to be kind of a shakeup with, you know, who was going to be starting,” Lindgren said. “But at the same time, we knew we had a lot of talent. We brought in some good recruits, … so, we have a lot of depth, and having depth in this game is, I think, crucial.”
Devenport said the men’s team’s starting lineup was fairly “freshman and sophomore heavy,” and that the team grew closer as the season progressed.
“I think team chemistry is the biggest thing that’s gotten better. We’ve gotten a little bit more … well-rounded,” Devenport said.
According to dela Rama, traveling for tournaments has allowed the team to grow closer over the years.
“Our chemistry and bonding is at its best right now,” dela Rama said.
Although the season had its ups and downs, dela Rama said, she was proud of the team’s progression and ability to “power through.”
As a senior, dela Rama said it is sad to think she is nearing the end of her career with Cal Lutheran golf, but that she has been fortunate to have such caring coaches.
“With the coaching staff and just the environment of the team, I’ve been really supported through all, and this is the best my game has ever been,” dela Rama said.
According to dela Rama, she was shooting mid-90s to high-80s her freshman year and is now averaging a 75 scoring average. For future Cal Lutheran golfers, dela Rama said her best advice is to “keep practicing” and lean on the coaching staff for guidance.
“There are times you are going to have ups and downs, but honestly, with the coaching staff, always look to them because they will always want to help you and want you to do better,” dela Rama said.
Although Cal Lutheran golf’s fall season has come to an end, Lindgren said they will be back in action in the spring, with more travel and tournaments to come, including the Kingsmen Invitational and Regals Invitational they will be hosting in March 2026.
