Pope Francis married 20 couples from different social backgrounds as a way to express greater tolerance than previous popes on many issues like family values, according to the BBC. The ceremony took place on Sunday at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Pope Francis told the couples that marriage is “not an easy road, it’s sometimes a contentious trip, but that’s life,” as reported by AFP news agency. The ceremony comes three weeks before a meeting that will be held to examine church teaching on family matters. Issues such as marriage, divorce, and contraception will be discussed among the Catholic bishops from around the world.
