Regals drop season opener against Saint John Fisher

On Sunday November 16, 2014 the California Lutheran University womenโ€™s basketball team traveled to Santa Cruz, CA to play Saint John Fisher College to open their 2014-2015 season. The game was evenly matched where there were 15 lead changes between both teams throughout the game, but ultimately the Regals came up short to a final score of 62-58.

Coming into the game, Head Coach Lindsay Goldblatt, wanted to transfer what theyโ€™ve worked on in practice into their game. Communication and forcing turnovers were two factors the Regals wanted to execute in their first game of the year.

โ€œI expect us to push the tempo to start Sundayโ€™s game. We want our defense to create easy offense off steals and traps,โ€ Goldblatt said.

โ€œOur team goals for our first game are to execute our offense be disciplined on defense and really communicate with each other,โ€ sophomore guard Jessica Salottolo said.

The Regals were able to create 16 turnovers but they only scored 7 points off of them, whereas the Cardinals created 26 turnovers and scored 27 points off of them, which proved to be a big factor in the game.

Other than the huge amount of turnovers, the Regals executed their offense shooting percentage wise. Throughout the game the Regals shot a field goal percentage of 42.3% (22-52) and the Cardinals shot 35.9% (23-64) from the field.

โ€œI am going to do whatever is in my power to get a win for my team and start the season off strong,โ€ junior guard Chelsea Jacoby said before the game.

Jacoby was able to execute her game plan, recording a double-double and leading all scorers with 19 points, but it just wasnโ€™t enough with the balanced attack coming from the Cardinals, who had three players scoring 13 points apiece.

Jacoby and sophomore forward Taylor Messick led the Regals in rebounding, grabbing 10 boards apiece. Doing the passing for the Regals were sophomore guards Janelle Porter and Jessica Salottolo recording four assists each.

The Regals will play their next game at home against Augsburg College on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Gilbert Arena.
