Hillary Clinton announces presidential bid

After months of speculation, Hillary Clinton officially announced her 2016 presidential bid on April 12.

According to CNN, the initial word reached supporters in an email from longtime Clinton ally, John Podesta, followed by a video launch on YouTube and “newly minted” Facebook page.

“I’m running for president,” Clinton said in the video. “Everyday Americans need a champion, and I want to be that champion so you can do more than just get by, you can get ahead. And stay ahead.”

A campaign press release detailed the Democratic nominee’s next steps to reintroduce the former first lady and secretary of state on her own terms to the the American people.

Five health centers at different University of California campuses to reopen

University officials said student health centers at five University of California campuses in Southern California will be reopened on April 13 according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Los Angeles Times reported unionized health professionals went on strike over contract negotiations, walking out of health clinics at University of California Los Angeles, San Diego, Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara on April 11. Their actions are part of a rolling strike that began last Thursday in Northern and Central California.

The article says the strike is in protest of the UC administration’s refusal to provide financial information they need to negotiate contracts and bolster health center resources.

Two men arrested near Camarillo Springs

The California Highway Patrol arrested two men Tuesday, April 7 in connection with a stolen vehicle, according to the Ventura County Star.

Authorities state suspicion arose after a caller reported a gray Honda traveling more than 100 mph on southbound Highway 101 near the Camarillo Springs Road exit, using the center median to pass other vehicles. The vehicle was soon identified as having been reported stolen on Feb. 21 by the Daly City Police.

CHP officers conducted a felony stop and arrested the driver, Derek Lee Hudson, 22, and his passenger, Robert Lawnell, Chambers, 44.

Ten San Bernardino County sherriff’s deputies placed on paid administrative leave

According to The Los Angeles Times, 10 San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies were placed on paid administrative leave on Friday after a TV news video showed them using excessive force.

Captured on Thursday afternoon by a KNBC-TV news helicopter, deputies can be seen repeatedly kicking and punching Francis Pusok, 30, even after he was on the ground with his hands behind his back. The sheriff’s department has said Pusok was the “prime suspect” in an identity theft case.

During a news conference on Friday afternoon, Sheriff John McMahon said, “I am disturbed and troubled by what I see. It does not appear to be in line with our policies and procedures.”

Since the video’s release, the sheriff’s department has received numerous threatening phone calls, emails and posts on social media. The Times has learned the FBI opened a civil rights investigation into the incident.
