Nonprofit blood testing organization Vitalant Research Institute came to California Lutheran University Feb. 13 for the biannual blood drive, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
As an incentive to donate, Vitalant provided donors with Valentine’s-themed goodie bags with a bracelet and heart-shaped stress balls to donors.
Sophmore Alexandra Eleazar said she donates blood regularly.
“Both of my parents are [registered nurses] and they’ve always pushed me to donate blood,” Eleazar said. “I was always curious about it and I wanted to make something out of my day.”
Taylor Testa, who works at Vitalant Research Institute, said Vitalant had nearly 30 to 40 people show up to the donation center and had more walk-ins than expected Feb. 13.
“It’s really an easier process than people think. The donor care staff make sure people are good to go, they won’t send anyone in there that shouldn’t be,” Testa said.
According to the organization’s website, Vitalant is engaged in blood donor epidemiology, virus discovery and cell therapy. Vitalant has more than 127 donation centers nationwide.
Testa said Vitalant sends units of blood to 95 percent of Ventura County hospitals, which is why they always come to Cal Lutheran. Testa said they want to support the local patients.
Testa said people should sign up for a donation time because it “makes the process faster” and ensures donor and patient safety. Testa said there are some medications that prevent people from being able to donate blood.
It is also crucial to eat a well-balanced meal and drink water before donating, Testa said.
