California Lutheran University President Lori Varlotta will be resigning her position effective May 31, 2024, according to an email sent on Tuesday from the Board of Regents.
The email stated Rev. Dr. John Nunes, pastor of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Santa Monica, California, and senior fellow at the Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy, has been appointed to serve as interim university president for a two-year term, beginning June 1, 2024.
According to the email, the decision came about following Varlottaโs request to be released from her contract early. The email also stated that Varlotta will return to the university as Distinguished Professor of Higher Education Leadership in fall of 2025.
