California Lutheran University students gathered to celebrate Diwali, on Monday, Nov. 4. The event was organized by Club India.
According to the Hindu American Foundation, “Deepavali or Diwali is known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ and is a Hindu holiday widely celebrated in India, in South Asia, and across the Hindu diaspora.”
“It is a celebration of light. I’m not Indian but my roommate of two years is, who was the president of the India club last year,” Vivian Meyer, co-president of Club India said.
The event took place outside the Student Union and is hosted annually. The event was free and open to all students on campus.
“We put on Diwali because it is an annual event that takes place in the fall. We had lights, traditional food, henna, and music. It’s a really fun event if you want to come learn about the holiday and explore other cultures,” Meyer said.
Also from the Hindu American Foundation, Diwali is a day of celebrating the return of Prince Rama of Ayodhya. Others use it as a day to celebrate the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.
The next Diwali celebration will take place next academic year in the fall.
