Purrrlandia Cat Lounge & Cafe opened in June on Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks, three miles away from California Lutheran University. Kat Killoran, Purrrlandia’s founder and CEO, said seeing cat cafes during her travels to Japan inspired her to bring the concept to the community.
“I was traveling a lot to Japan for work, and that’s where I first had exposure to cat cafes, and I thought, ‘This is exactly what these kitties need—to be seen,’” Killoran said. “It’s not easy coming into any community with a concept that nobody has really done before…the moment I called the [city] planning department they were so interested and so committed.”
Since its grand opening on June 24, Killoran said the cat cafe provides a space to hang out, enjoy treats and relax while showcasing cats looking for forever homes.
According to the Purrrlandia website, the cafe houses over 20 cats with an adoption team on site to assist potential adopters in finding the right match. The cat lounge’s two-room layout gives visitors the chance to interact with cats in a comfortable setting. The cafe has two separate spaces, divided by a glass wall and doors, which distinguish the cafe side from the two main rooms in the cat lounge.
Pricing is also listed on the website, cat lounge sessions can be reserved for $32 an hour per person. These sessions allow visitors to sit and mingle with the cats, capture some photos, or use the space to study.
“The beautiful thing about Purrrlandia is you don’t have to come in here to adopt. If you do come in, you can have companionship without the commitment. It’s been a great space for people who can’t have pets,” Killoran said.
Inside both the cat lounge and the cafe, customers will find books, chairs, games, merchandise and study spaces. Killoran said the cafe wants to make affordable packages for students in the future.
“We are working on membership packages for students. We don’t have those yet, but they’re coming,” Killoran said.
The cafe side displays a menu of caffeinated drinks, vegan Japanese donuts, teas, pastries and Italian sodas. Customers can grab a beverage or snack while watching the cats through the glass, which attracts customers, Killoran said.
“We have a safe, fun space. It’s a fun thing to do with friends and family. We even have high schoolers come on dates, which is really cute to see,” Killoran said.
Killoran said the cafe values the local community and recognizes the importance of what her business offers to the customers in Thousand Oaks.
“I see a lot of customers in awe as soon as they walk in. A lot of people are surprised and they love what we have to offer for the community,” said Shelby Little, one of Purrrlandia’s employees. “I’ve helped out with rescues, worked at pet hotels, but this was never something I thought was an option or a possibility. It combined my love for people and helping animals.”
Killoran said she maintains a positive outlook and looks forward to watching the business grow with the community.
“[I work] long weeks, but I’d clean a litter box rather than hangout with investment bankers any day,” Killoran said.
Purrrlandia Cat Lounge & Cafe is located at 728 N. Moorpark Road and is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
