Regals Slam Poets for Second Conference Victory

The Regals tennis squad defeated the Whittier College Poets 6-3 on April 11, winning their second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match, their eighth overall and their last home game of the season.

In doubles, the Regals won two out of three matches, dominating both. Junior Rebecca Gold and senior Sarah Baker defeated Whittier 8-0 in their doubles match, not allowing the opponents a single set win.

โ€œ[We] had a very close match, and we overall had great communication,โ€ Gold said. โ€œWe were very aggressive, and that’s what helped us win.โ€

โ€œBecca and I really took over the net well,โ€ Baker said. โ€œWe were consistent.โ€

Baker played tennis with the Regals squad all four of her years at California Lutheran University, and varsity tennis all four years at Quartz Hill High School in Palmdale, California

Saturday the Regals celebrated Senior Day in honor of Bakerโ€™s last home match.

โ€œIt’s kind of bittersweet, but luckily I have a plan for after graduation,โ€ Baker said.

In her singles match, Baker faced Whittier freshman Jada Henry, and won in a three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Henry credited Bakerโ€™s win to her consistency as a player.

โ€œShe made me realize just how inconsistent I am,โ€ Henry said.

Henry said being bested by a more experienced player was a positive experience for her, showing her where she can improve.

โ€œI feel like I gained more than I lost today,โ€ Henry said.

Cal Lutheranโ€™s other doubles win came from freshman Annette Sousa and sophomore Emily Werman in the number two game, with a powerful 8-1 victory.
