    California rain results in evacuations

    Areas all across California were affected by the heavy rain March 7, leading to evacuations and some rescues.

    The Associated Press reported low-altitude cities were most affected by strong winds and excessive rainfall which resulted in loss of power.

    According to the Ventura County Star, four people were stranded in Encino along the Los Angeles River and firefighters were sent to rescue them. Crews were also helpful in clearing the homeless with no injuries reported.

    People living in Santa Cruz county were also evacuated due to rising water along the Upper San Lorenzo River, and a multitude of arriving flights in San Francisco were delayed or cancelled, Ventura County Star reported.

     

    First lady Nancy Reagan dies at age 94

    Nancy Reagan, former first lady, died March 7 at age 94 from congestive heart failure.

    According to CNN, Reagan died in her home in Los Angeles and requested that contributions be made to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Foundation instead of flowers upon her death.

    โ€œMrs. Reagan will be buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, next to her husband, Ronald Wilson Reagan, who died on June 5, 2004. Prior to the funeral service, there will be an opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects at the library,โ€ Joanne Drake, spokeswoman of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, said.

    She is survived by her two children with Ronald Reagan, Patti David and Ron Reagan.

     

    New iphone 7 may adopt OLED screen

    Apple is rumored to use an OLED screen on its iPhones beginning in 2017.

    OLED, which means organic light-emitting diode, would ultimately give the phones a longer-lasting battery and power efficiency, according to CNET.

    iPhones currently sport LCD (liquid crystal display) screens but OLED screens are โ€œthinner, lighter and more flexible than LCDs,โ€ CNET reported.

    Apple may be signing a deal with Samsung and LG worth $12 billion to have the necessary materials made, according to 9to5Mac.

    Apple smartwatches are already manufactured with the OLED display.

     

    Suicide attack in Iraq kills at least 47

    A fuel truck laced with explosives was driven into a security checkpoint by a suicide bomber south of Baghdad March 7.

    According to ABC, at least 47 people were killed and dozens were wounded. The dead included 39 civilians and eight members of security forces.

    โ€œThe Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in an online statement circulated by supporters,โ€ ABC reported.

    According to a senior security official, the explosions destroyed the checkpoint completely and over 100 cars were affected.

     

    Creator of email Ray Tomlinson dies

    Ray Tomlinsonโ€™s employer, Raytheon, told CNN that the creator of email died March 7 at age 74.

    According to CNN, โ€œTomlinson invented direct email messages in 1971. Before his invention, electronic messages could be shared only on a very limited network.โ€

    Tomlinson graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MIT, and worked for a technology firm in Boston at the time of his invention.

    The Internet Hall of Fame welcomed Tomlinson in 2012, CNN reported.
