𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐂𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐧

Karsten Lundring, otherwise known as “The Candy Man,” was a member of the first graduating class of California Lutheran University in 1965. He was also among the first students to enroll at Cal Lutheran in 1961. Three generations of Lundrings have graduated from Cal Lutheran, Lundring said, including his son in 1994 and his grandson in 2024.

Lundring was first given his nickname 57 years ago. The Cal Lutheran football team was playing an away game against the University of San Diego. Lundring said he had a family business picnic in Long Beach that day, but he moved the picnic time forward so that he could make it on time to the Cal Lutheran game at night.

The candy was initially meant for kids attending his family picnic; however, when he got to San Diego for the game, Lundring realized he had forgotten to throw the candy at the picnic. So, Lundring said he brought the candy into the stands and threw it whenever Cal Lutheran would make a good play. Ever since that day, Lundring said he always brings candy to Cal Lutheran athletic games.

Nov. 11, 7:45 PM update: The Ventura County Fire Department updated the public on the status of the Mountain Fire during a press conference Monday evening. Fire and county officials also spoke about recovery efforts and resources as crews continue to make progress on fire containment. According to Cal Fire, the Mountain Fire currently spans 20,630 acres and is 42% contained as of 7:08 p.m.

“We’re six days into this incident now,” Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said during Monday night’s press conference. “It feels like it’s been weeks, but we’re six days in.”

Gardner said the fire is looking “really good,” crediting line commanders for their “24/6” work efforts since the fire broke out.

La Universidad Luterana de California realizó un evento el 6 de noviembre, titulado “Uniendo Fronteras: Entendiendo el Panorama Político de Venezuela y su Impacto en Colombia”. Este evento es parte de la serie “Colombia @ CLU exchange”, dirigido por la Profesora y Decana Asociada de Equidad, Inclusión y Pertenencia, Lorena Muñoz.

Un tema sumamente importante, según Muñoz, fue la discusión de la situación de las mujeres migrantes fuera de Venezuela y los estereotipos alrededor de ellas. Alexandra Choconta, investigadora académica y presentadora del evento, dijo que su trabajo es eliminar y combatir estos estereotipos, no seguir reproduciendo estas lógicas en los medios de comunicación.

“En nuestra exposición Bridging Venezuela en Colombia, lo que intentamos hacer fue traer una perspectiva histórica desde nuestra posición como académicos colombianos”, dijo Choconta. “Y de la situación en Venezuela y cómo ha impactado especialmente la migración a Colombia. Lo que intentamos fue como dar varios puntos de vista histórico de situaciones históricas importantes y cuáles han sido como las mayores repercusiones para las mujeres migrantes venezolanas en Colombia”.

There is little to no information regarding California Lutheran University’s stance on its environmental impact. Only information on the university’s Environmental Science and Studies degrees as well as an article about sustainability projects from over a decade ago can be found online. The Echo was also able to find a 2009 Cal Lutheran Sustainability Action Plan, yet no updates or statements have followed since the release of it.

In comparison to Cal Lutheran, both Pepperdine University and Chapman University, two local private institutions, have Offices of Sustainability on their campus - according to their respective websites.

According to the Academic Affairs page on Cal Lutheran’s website, there is a sustainability committee at the university. Associate Professor and Chair of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department Robert Dull said the sustainability committee has not met since before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the academic school year in early 2020.

Last Wednesday, Monique “Ms. Mo” Nunes, University President John Nunes’ wife, invited students to their home for a fall-themed meet-and-greet event.

“It’s a wonderful event to hang out with people from around the campus as well as our new president and Ms. Mo,” senior Rylli Matter said. “It was just one of those things where I knew I would feel welcomed and have so much fun.”

Junior Elizabeth Marquez said that events like these are important because they provide the opportunity to connect with one another and meet new people.

𝐂𝐋𝐔 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐭𝐬 𝐎𝐧 ‘𝐍𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭’

California Lutheran University’s Theatre and Dance Department performed “No Exit,” a student-directed play by senior Riley Herbert. The play features three students trying to figure out why they are brought together in Hell.

The show ran from Thursday, Oct. 17 to Sunday, Oct. 20. The original play was written by French playwright Jean-Paul Sartre in 1944. Herbert said the inspiration for choosing this play was based on her work in the Cal Lutheran’s Political Science Department.

Herbert said she is currently doing an honors thesis on restorative justice, focusing largely on rehabilitation and figuring out why people commit crimes.

California Lutheran University’s Kingsmen football team faced the Redlands Bulldogs in the annual Smudge Pot game on Saturday, Oct. 19 at William Rolland Stadium. The Kingsmen lost to the Bulldogs 17-15, two points short of beating the team for the first time since 2012.

This matchup also took place during Homecoming Weekend and senior wide receiver Cade Cadam said that the energy could be felt coming from the crowd.

“Awesome, awesome atmosphere, this is my second Smudge Pot game. Last year was at Redlands and so I never got to experience here at Cal Lutheran,” Cadam said. “It was an awesome turnout, just one play, we just didn’t get it done today.”

California Lutheran University Kingsmen soccer (5-5-3) played in a scoreless tie against the University of Redlands (7-2-3) at William Rolland Stadium on Saturday night.

Neither team was able to put any points on the board, with solid defensive play from both teams, each accounting for one save.

Head Coach Miguel Ruiz, in his seventh season at the helm, said he liked the discipline his team portrayed in the matchup, despite not coming out with the victory.

California Lutheran University hosted an event called AI in the Workplace: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities on Thursday, Oct. 10 in the Lundring Events Center.

Vlad Vaiman, the associate dean and professor for the School of Management, was a keynote speaker for the event and spoke on the importance of applying AI to our everyday lives and utilizing it as a tool.

“So this year, we’re talking about application or applications in plural of artificial intelligence tools, in navigating challenges and embracing opportunities of using artificial intelligence in the workplace,” Vaiman said.

California Lutheran University’s women’s soccer team tied with the University of California Santa Cruz on the Regals’ Senior Day on Sunday.

“Our goals for the season, despite today’s tie, is just to continue to grow our chemistry as a team. Every team is going to come at us with a lot of intensity cause they wanna knock down the champs but I think for us it’s just, continuing to stay stuck in and continuing to get better every half of every game, and getting some more goals and times to celebrate with our team,” senior defender Avery West said.

Before the match, the Regals took time to honor and celebrate the seniors on the team.

Last Wednesday, California Lutheran University Career Services held its annual Graduate School Fair, inviting students to learn more about various graduate school programs. According to the Cal Lutheran website, students who attended the fair could learn about graduate programs, admission processes, and how to stand out in applications.

Senior Riley Herbert said the importance of events like the Grad Fair is the opportunity that they provide to meet people face-to-face.

“I think with a lot of graduate programs there are a lot of webinars and a lot of online events which are really great, but it’s just kind of a strain,” Herbert said. “It’s really nice to get to meet people in person and have some of your fears about applying to grad school alleviated, and just really get to talk with them and ask them your actual questions.”

California Lutheran University’s Women’s Volleyball team swept the Whittier Poets this past Friday in the Regals’ first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match of the season.

Before the match, Head Coach Kellee Roesel and Assistant Coach Alec Bennett established a game plan of how the Regals could win based on past matches with the Poets.

“Coming into today we were really thinking about containing their outside hitters,” Bennett said. “Whoever they were gonna throw in on that outside position, and then making their bigger players move quick, so we were trying to establish pretty quick offense to catch them off guard.”

Each fall semester, a select number of California Lutheran University students embark on the Oxford Study Abroad program. The first half is spent in Oxford and the second half is spent in London.

Compared to the other study abroad programs offered at Cal Lutheran, the application process for the program is considered “very competitive,” per the OEA’s website. Students are to apply one year in advance and fill out the Office of Education Abroad’s questions section.

This year, only eight students were accepted to the Oxford program. Dru Pagliassotti, a professor in the Communication Department, is the faculty leader for the current program.

At California Lutheran University, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is represented by student-athletes here on campus. These athletes serve as advocates and leadership voices pertaining to fall and spring athletic sports teams.

Cal Lutheran student-athletes Jacqueline Brandon and Eric Talbert discussed and shared their roles and obligations regarding the SAAC.

Brandon, a junior on the women’s water polo team, serves as the president of the SAAC at Cal Lutheran and a national representative for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
